Intro to En Plein Air Painting: Painting on Location with Deborah Czernecky

Curious about En Plein Air painting (painting outdoors on location), but unsure what to bring or how to set up? Geared towards advanced beginners in oils or acrylic, this two-part workshop offers an easy approach to painting on location, capturing the essence of a scene directly from nature.
We will focus on practical skills – setting up a field easel, appropriate art materials, finding a suitable location (where is the sun?), demonstration, and how to start you painting en plein air!
The fee of $80 per person includes your admission to BOTH classes in this workshop series over consecutive weeks on the following dates:
Wednesday, August 27th, 2025 from 9am-12pm
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025 from 9am-12pm
RECOMMENDED SUPPLY LIST
Small sketchbook and 2b pencil.
Suitable painting brushes for your medium, a min of 4, 1/8”, 1/4”, 1/2” and 1”. Flat or Filbert. Painting surface – four 8x10 canvas panels or hardboard or canvas pad. Recommend Colours: Warm Yellow, Cad Yellow med, Cool Yellow, Lemon or Hansa Yellow, Warm Red, Cad Red light, Cool Red, Alizarin Crimson or Perm Crimson, Warm Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cool Blue, Cobalt Blue, Titanium White. Extra colours to bring if you have them: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Viriden Green, Magenta.
OMS and suitable container for Oils
Two min 1 litre containers of water for Acrylics.
Your palette – paper palette for acrylics, wood or paper palette for oils.
Paper towels and garbage bags. Portable outdoor easel or pochade box with tripod. (I have a couple of extra outdoor easels if you need to borrow one).
Painting umbrella IF you have one.
Sun Hat with brim and sun screen.
Portable chair.
Bug Spray.
Water, water, water for drinking.
Most Important – A Sense of Humour!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Deborah Czernecky is an accomplished Canadian artist based on picturesque Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A passionate explorer of Canada's diverse natural beauty, Deborah's work is deeply rooted in her love for the outdoors and her dedication to capturing the country's vast and varied landscapes.
Whether painting on location in remote wilderness settings or refining her work in studio, Deborah's art is inspired by the ever-changing light, seasons, and textures of nature. Known for her en plein air technique, she often paints directly within the environment, immersing herself in the scenery to bring a vibrant authenticity to each piece.
Deborah holds a formal training in fine arts from institutions including St. Lawrence College (graduated with Distinction), the Mission Renaissance School (Old Masters Techniques), and Ottawa University. She has been an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists since 2009 and was featured in the 2018 Ducks Unlimited National Art Portfolio, a testament to national recognition.
