In some form or other, art impacts all of us on a daily basis. International Artist Day honors those creative people who will leave a record of today for the future that can’t be captured in history books. The best way to celebrate International Artist Day is to support your local artists.

Victoria has a thriving art community that expresses the unique personality of both the community we live in, and the personality of the artist. If you’ve been looking for something to spruce up your living room or bedroom, then head out and find a unique piece that will bring life and personality to your home.

The Gage Gallery on Oak Bay Avenue celebrates International Artist Day with a solo display of the work of Natalie Shumka titled ‘Calm from Chaos’. Natalie graduated from Victoria College of Art as class Valedictorian in 1999 and has been a full-time artist for the last fifteen years. Her fine brushwork has brought her national acclaim with work exhibited with the Federation of Canadian Artists and locally at the Sooke and Sidney Fine Art Shows. Natalie has three children with Elliot who is now 7 months old. She says "It is so hard to be an artist and have small children and I can only hope that they benefit in some way. There is always laundry to do, and floors to vacuum, and I am constantly choosing between standing in front of a canvas, or looking after the chores. But the kids always come first. Homework beats painting any day. Cooking dinner is a must. But, fifteen minutes painting is more than I had when the day started, and I just keep reminding myself of that. And I have to thank Lisa Baldissera for that idea."

‘Calm from Chaos’ runs from Oct 18th to November 5th at the Gage Gallery, 2031 Oak Bay Avenue, Victoria. The Gallery is open from 11am – 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.
