The Coastal Sound Youth Choir is known for passionate and imaginative performances. The choir, which won the Canadian Competition for Amateur Choirs this past summer, is made up of 65 young people aged 14-22 from municipalities across Metro Vancouver. They are part of Coastal Sound Music Academy.

The concert, conceived by noted choral conductor Carrie Tennant, features the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir performing music by artists ranging from Vancouvers Woodpigeon through Arcade Fire, Mendelssohn and the Rolling Stones. The event, now in its third year, evolved out of Tennants desire to explore the artistry of popular music alongside the classical choral cannon. What we are doing with Indiekr parallels how popular song was experienced in the past, she said. In the Renaissance people would get together to sing the popular madrigals and chansons of the time. She got the project rolling by asking choir members ages 14 to 22 - for their ideas. The singers suggested the songs on our Facebook page. I wanted to know what was on their iPods. We ended up with a short list of roughly 150 songs. I listened for hours.

Choir member Johanna Gallant, 16, says choir practice is one of the highlights of her week and a way she can express herself. Last week there were about 10 of us taking the bus home together at 10 pm. We were excited from practice so sang some of the pieces, she said. It inspires me.
