If We Were Birds

This recent play, by one of Canada’s most accomplished young playwrights, was a Governor General Award winner. If We Were Birds – based upon the ancient Greek myth by Ovid – tells the story of King Tereus and represents a harrowing exploration of violence and revenge, focusing upon the treatment and suffering of women in times of conflict, with contemporary references to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Nanking, and Berlin. The style of writing is a powerful mixture of classical and modern, tied together by a superior poetical skill.
“A stunning new play”. The Globe and Mail
