Identity and the Law: Lessons from Polyamory
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
What does it mean to “identify as” – as Jewish, female, black, Christian, homosexual,...? In recent years, polyamorous persons have been seeking “identity status.” But the meaning and legal ramifications of this concept are unclear.
Jim Ayers will explore this murky and confusing “identity phenomenon” when it comes to a distinct group of people believing in the power of love – close, committed love – between multiple partners.
Jim Ayers is a philosophy professor at Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina), where he has taught since 1984. An integral member of the Philosophy Department, he established the philosophy major in 2007. His areas of interest are varied and include political and social philosophy, environmental ethics, consequentialist ethics, theory of knowledge, logic, and theory of explanation. For several years, he has taught a philosophy course on social issues which includes the topic of polyamory.
