Lonely, beautiful and furious, she’s unable to participate in school life owing to a chronic illness. Caroline, housebound, when some dude from her high school shows up wanting help with an English assignment. But by the time the assignment is done, they’ll both be changed forever.
I and You By Lauren Gunderson Western Edge’s production of Gunderson’s timely, sensitive and thought provoking play brings us two young characters, each on the brink of major discovery. Caroline (Melissa Kahan) is a teen girl who has spent most of her life in her bedroom, suffering from a chronic illness that has kept her away from school and normal social interaction, forcing her to create a world of her own in her bedroom. Shock and fear are her first reactions when Anthony (Curtis Magas) , teen basketball star heartthrob, appears in her bedroom one night, asking for her help. Her anxiety turns to curiosity, as he shares the project he desperately (given his truly sad poster board) needs her assistance on. It’s a project on Walt Whitman’s poem Song of Myself from Leaves of Grass. And as the two teens come together to understand the poem, they also begin to understand one another, to see each other for who they really are. This play is tender, romantic, and shows us that love really is the soul’s recognition of itself in another. Gunderson has written a truly compassionate work with a twist and a shock that most won’t see coming.
Directed by Bonnie Catterson Kent, with Miles Kehoe, and gorgeous design by Andrew Kent, I and You will take you on a ride, pull at your heartstrings, and set you down in a place that feels both familiar and brand new.
