7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

The VIU faculty association’s Human Rights and International Solidarity Committee presents this 51-minute film that documents the notorious history of Toronto-based Hudbay Minerals’ worldwide operations.

Hudbay is one of Canada’s oldest mining companies and was featured in a critical The New York Times article earlier this year for alleged human rights abuses in Guatemala.

The exposé reveals Hudbay’s widespread environmental contamination of its primary operating base in Flin Flon MN, reports on allegations of murder, gang rapes and shootings in Guatemala, reveals Hudbay’s hidden conflicts with indigenous people in Peru and the company’s plans to destroy one of the world’s most biologically-diverse ecosystems in Arizona that is home to the only known wild jaguar in the USA.

After the screening at VIU on July 14 that features a Q&A by documentary filmmaker John Dougherty, the director and his film will travel to Victoria for a screening at The Vic Theatre on Friday, July 15.
