Are you keen on exploring leading edge HR and business knowledge? Do you enjoy learning and sharing thoughts with others? Each meeting we have a discussion topic based on a book, article or video. This provides a forum where HR Practitioners can tap into the experiences of the group and link to vast array of HR related literature. Not everyone will have time to read the book, article or view a video before the meeting. Please join us regardless and share your experience and learn together.
Reading for this month: Instead of reading a book for the May gathering we propose that we follow a breaking issue of local notoriety, and of considerable import in BC and Alberta, but with significant national implications, and of immediate relevance to human resource management practise, - over the merry month of May, and discuss the ramifications at our May 22nd gathering.
The issue: The Temporary Foreign Workers programme, its links to unemployment issues, and skill shortages, plus recruitment, and talent management policies and practise, and the role of human resource management professionals in this regard (following on from Dave Ulrichs shared wisdom on the competencies and roles of HR as champions in their organizations).
By way of background, there are two articles. One, a paste up prepared of topical press clippings (complete with video and audio links if you are so inclined), and the other a highly informed and learned, yet brief and politically impartial, article from the CD Howe Institute, Temporary Foreign Workers in Canada: Are They Really Filling Labour Shortages, authored by Professor Dominique M. Gross, of SFU.
