An open house reception for the 2013/2014 Writer in Residence is being held at the Haig-Brown Heritage House on Sunday, December 1 from 1:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. Take this opportunity to welcome author Andrew Nikiforuk, this years writer, who will be staying at the House from December to April.

For more than two decades Nikiforuk has written about energy, economics and the West for a variety of Canadian publications. He has won seven National Magazine Awards since 1989 and top honours for investigative writing from the Association of Canadian Journalists.

His book The Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of the Continent, published by Greystone Books, was a national bestseller and won the 2009 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award. It was also listed as a finalist for the Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment.

Nikiforuk is a skilled teacher and public speaker whose personal interests are an excellent fit with the programming mandate at the Haig-Brown House, which he noted in his application letter to the Haig-Brown House Writer in Residence program:

Given the focus of this work (how Canadians use and abuse their resource wealth), I feel that I can enrich this residency and honour the great Haig-Brown legacy.

While he is here, he will participate in Museum programming and be available to help writers with their manuscripts. Andrew Nikiforuks residency is made possible through assistance from Canada Council for the Arts.

The Haig-Brown House is located at 2250 Campbell River Rd.
