Canadas rivers and oceans have major renewable energy potential. Efforts to collect energy from river and ocean currents are now being explored both on Canadas east and west coasts. Join us at Camosun College in Victoria, BC for the October 24th, 2013 Vancouver Island GTEx Forum and learn about several amazing ocean energy initiatives.
About the Speakers:
Dr. Chris Campbell is the Executive Director of Marine Renewables Canada, a non-profit organization focused on building an alliance of industry, governments and utilities to ensure that Canada is a leading player with the emerging renewable ocean energy industry. With 120 members and growing, the group has succeeded in attracting government and utility attention towards this important clean electricity resource and low-carbon economic opportunity. Chris has a BSc from Wales and PhD from Newfoundland and has consulted in the areas of offshore oil, aquaculture, seafood and ocean technology development. Chris will provide an update on the groups activity, upcoming events and joint ventures.
Dr. Brad Buckham is an Assistant Professor at the University of Victorias Mechanical Engineering department. He received a BC Advanced Systems Institute Research Award for 2004-2005 and was named a BC Innovation Council Entrepreneurial Fellow in 2009. Over the past fifteen years, Brads research group has evolved simulation software that can be used to design and study remotely operated underwater vehicles, deepsea explorations and moored wave energy converters. This research, executed within the West Coast Wave Initiative (WCWI) - a $2.5M program, is funded by NRC, PICS, NSERC and several private sector partners. As a WCWI Director, Brad will outline the computer simulation design work underway and associated operating strategies for offshore technology applications.
Ryan Nicoll is the Co-Founder of Dynamic Systems Analysis Ltd. (DSA). Ryan is a mechanical engineer with expertise in simulation of cable dynamics, rigid bodies, control systems, and hydrodynamics with a MASc from the University of Victoria. He has research and consulting experience in aquaculture, marine renewable energy, oil and gas, and civil and naval marine systems. Ryan will provide an overview of DSA: start up history, significant projects, challenges overcome and the tools needed for the range of customers he has aligned with. DSA provides effective solutions for marine, offshore and subsea industries through simulation software and engineering analysis services.
