The Energy Storage Frontier: Pacific Northwest Perspectives, Advances and Projections

The Pacific North West is blessed to be able to generate much of its energy from renewable sources. Buffering the resulting intermittency and other needs of grids and microgrids will require the deployment of large-scale energy storage solutions both at the distribution and transmission levels of regional electrical systems. In recognition of these needs, industry leaders are becoming increasingly active on energy storage.

About the Speakers:

Representative Jeff Morris, a fourth-generation native of Guemes Island in Washington State, was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1996. As Principal of Energy Horizon Corporation, Jeff directs the Pacific Northwest Economic Regions Energy (PNWER) Portfolio and consults for energy companies on commercialization and project development. Jeff currently co-chairs one national energy task force and is an advisory member to the US EPA. He co-founded the Northwest Energy Angels, now Element 8.

George Roe is a research professor at the University of Alaska, with the Alaska Center for Energy and Power. He brings to bear 35 years of energy-related technology development and transition experience at Boeing. George is passionate about the opportunities for early adopter market implementation of electrical and thermal energy storage technologies provided by the rural microgrids of Alaska. He will address their energy storage experience and possible future focus areas.

Dr. Peter Wild is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria. He holds the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Chair in Sustainable Energy Systems Design and is the Director of the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic). Dr. Wild's research interests include: optical sensors for industrial, environmental and biomedical applications; impacts of integration of renewable energy generation into existing grids; and renewable energy generation technologies.

Russ Weed is VP Business Development of UniEnergy Technologies (UET). UET produces and delivers large-scale energy storage systems for utility, grid, micro-grid, commercial and industrial applications. The core technology is an advanced vanadium flow battery. The Uni.System is safe, operationally flexible, reliable, long-life and cost-effective. Based in the Seattle area, UET has a 67,000 sqft facility scaling up to produce 100MW annually of containerized systems. Russ has 23 years of experience as a VP business development and general counsel and has worked at GE and Labtec.
