The GVYO opens its Season of Symphonies with a programme that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit. The overture to Verdi’s opera Nabucco has at its heart the famous “Va, pensiero” theme, the beautiful lament of the exiled people of Judah before King Nabucco finally sets them free. Supermaximum by Kenji Bunch is an uplifting work inspired by chain-gang prisoners and their response to hardships with music instead of violence. Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 is a majestic work evocative of “the new world”. Brimming with instantly-recognized themes such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Goin’ Home”, it is perhaps Dvorak’s best-loved work.

For 31 years the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra – expressive, focused, and adventurous - has brought symphonic sounds to thousands of music lovers, young and old, in communities from Bamfield to Whitehorse and from Haida Gwaii to the Kootenays. In rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops, the orchestra’s 65 players explore centuries of symphonic style, develop ensemble and performance skills, and build lasting friendships. In the rehearsal hall and on the concert stage, the GVYO brings music to life as only young people can, with verve, enthusiasm and inexhaustible energy, orchestrating joy for themselves and their audience alike.

Yariv Aloni is a graduate of the Jerusalem Music Centre and a former member of the Aviv and Penderecki Quartets. As violist he has performed and recorded worldwide. Associate Music Director of GVYO since 2002, Mr. Aloni was appointed Music Director in July 2010. He is also Artistic Director of the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria and the Victoria Chamber Orchestra.
