A day for all generations!
How many generations of your family will be at the Grandfamily Day celebration, Sunday, May 25th, 2014 at Mellor Hall. "Activities for the day are meant to be inclusive for all members of the extended family," says Vicki Holman, Executive Director of the Cowichan Seniors Community Foundation. "When we think of family outings we usually see the parents towing behind small children. But often there is a grandparent or older parent left behind. Our Grandfamily day is meant for the broader, larger family unit."
Parents with young children are encouraged to invite aunts and uncles so that bringing along an older parent or grandparent becomes an extended family outing. The intention of the activities planned for the day is to entertain all generations with roaming entertainment such as clowns, a tricycle parade, the penny farthings, and even an dog agility demonstration. Activity stations include the tricycle decorating station, a reading corner and the steeplechase.
"From my own experiences I know how much our seniors enjoy seeing the smiles on small children, from that perspective we know that smiles are contagious." says Holman. "Having broad public participation is key to the success of this event as an opportunity to mix the generations in an active, happy and positive environment. "
The foundation is actively seeking sponsorship and seniors service providers to set up activities and participate in hosting the event. Admission for the general public is $1. "We have tonnes of activities to pack into four hours but with the right sponsors and volunteers it's very doable." says Holman.
The Cowichan Seniors Community Foundation is a registered charity and operates to advocate for seniors services and assist in the community response to emerging issues for seniors in Cowichan.
