The Burnside Gorge Community Association is hosting the annual Gorge Waterway Clean-up on Saturday, September 17 from 10am – 12pm. Volunteers are invited to join in the clean-up efforts to remove garbage and debris from Victoria’s Gorge Waterway and shoreline areas.
Volunteers meet at Selkirk Green Park on Waterfront Crescent, in the Selkirk Waterfront area, and Victoria Harbour Ferry will transport teams of volunteers to clean-up locations along the shoreline. Gloves and boots are provided in limited supply - if you have them, bring them! Strong volunteers are also needed to help load equipment on Friday Sept 16th from 4-6pm.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering for this event can contact Vanessa Normore, Community Recreation Coordinator, at 250-388-5251 or [email protected]. This is a great volunteer initiative for school and corporate teams, families, and those who care about the environment.
The Gorge Waterway Clean-up is part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up, an international initiative to clean up shorelines around the world. Since 2000, thousands of volunteers have removed tons of trash from local shorelines and water, preserving wildlife habitat and restoring the pristine beauty of the inner Gorge Waterway. The event is also a great community builder that promotes environmental awareness and stewardship, with people of all ages and walks of life participating.
Clean-up efforts have had such an impact that the once polluted waterway has recently seen a resurgence of public swimming, celebrated in the annual Gorge Swimfest.
