2018 marks the hundred-year anniversary of the death of Albert ‘Ginger’ Goodwin, one of the most well-known labour activists in the history of our country. The Cumberland Museum & Archives plans to pay tribute through participatory art and music projects, an exhibit ‘Goodwin’s Reach’, an arts symposium, workshops and talks, live music, the re-enactment of Goodwin’s funeral procession and other engaging programming throughout Miners Memorial, June 22 to 24, 2018.
The re-enactment of Goodwin’s funeral procession on Saturday, June 23, is the pivotal event of the commemoration weekend. TheatreWorks performers and a brass band head the procession. The Miners Memorial Choir share songs along the route. All are invited to march down Dunsmuir Avenue and participate in the re-creation of the iconic photograph from 1918. The procession proceeds to Village Park where theatre and song are shared. Live music and a BBQ, by donation, follow. Dress in blacks or period costumes and walk closer to the front, or join those with current banners and signs towards the back. Muster at 4pm on the corner of 1st and Dunsmuir.
