Two just-married Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, are informed by Don Alhambra del Bolero, the Grand Inquisitor, that one of them has just become the King of a far-away island country called “Barataria”.
Unfortunately, no one seems to know which of the two brothers is the actual King. Only the former foster mother can identify which was given to her care as an infant by the former King (with a little memory prompting provided by Don Alhambra’s torture chamber).
