This year‟s festival is once again a celebration of BC in that all of the performers are now based in British Columbia. The festival runs for three nights, and includes four events in three intimate venues. Expect harmonious horns, pulsating percussion, formidable funk, vintage vinyl and dynamic rhythms from all over the world.
Rest assured, there will be no better place to get your groove on than this year‟s Garden City Grooves Festival! Dawn Pemberton Headlining the festival are two incredible BC-based acts: Dawn Pemberton, and Victoria‟s own The New Groovement (releasing their first full-length studio album). Dawn Pemberton: Vancouver soul dynamo Dawn Pemberton has a deep musical foundation rooted in tradition. Dawn spent her formative years surrounded by a family of multi- instrumentalists and developed a true love of music as a young girl. She is heavily influenced by rhythm, and is drawn to the percolating under current of soul, jazz and funk which is infused in everything that she does: “I‟ve got a rhythmic stream running through me at all times. It‟s all about the groove for me.”
Dawn Pemberton is the secret weapon of funk and soul groups all over Western Canada and she has shared the stage with the likes of Maceo Parker, Linda Tillery, The Sojourners, John Boutté and Dutch Robinson. Her gifts have also been featured in the music of future jazz group 1Luv (Sonar Kollektiv), soul-jazz collective The Nightcrawlers, and blues juggernaut, The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer. A staple of the West Coast music scene, Dawn can be found tearing it up as a vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and go-to live performer and session musician. On leadoff single “Deeper‟, soulful grooves meet swirling organs, punchy horns, and tight drum breaks that pay homage to Dawn‟s roots in gospel but update the sound with a feel all her own.
The New Groovement: The New Groovement will be releasing their long-anticipated at this year‟s Garden City Grooves festival. If The Roots had the soul of Aretha Franklin and the energy of Jamiroquai then you‟d have The New Groovement. The band seamlessly blends elements of R&B, soul, and hip hop to create a funk-i-fied feast for the ears that is as unique as it is versatile. Punchy horns, sweet vocals, clever rhymes, and tight percussion combine to create energetic, feel-good music that will get you out of your seat and onto the dance floor! This rising star in BC‟s music scene has performed at all of Southern Vancouver Island‟s biggest festivals, toured mainland BC and receivedregular airplay on Victoria radio stations (including being selected as The Zone 91.3 band-of-the- month for August 2015). They were also asked to open for critically acclaimed acts such as Five Alarm Funk and The Coup, and have been praised in prominent print, television and radio media in Victoria. Their new album was produced by well-known Victoria producer, Joby Baker (producer of Alex Cuba‟s Grammy-winning album). This up-and-coming group has quickly made a name for itself with its massive shows and energetic parties; it‟s one band you will not want to miss!
