Garage Sale ~ VIU Student Nurses to Ghana, West Africa

HUGE garage sale! Selling tons of furniture, electronics, appliances, household items, toys, and many other treasures!

We are currently in our third year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Vancouver Island University. We, along with two of our instructors will be travelling to Ghana, West Africa in the Spring of 2011 to attend a Field School. We plan to focus on health in urban and rural Africa within the community of Sunyani in central Ghana. Our work will continue with initiatives that have emerged from a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) grant that the university received in 2005. Previously, students in Forestry, Global Studies and Recreation/Tourism, and Health and Human Services have learned and worked with a variety of projects related to eco-tourism, economic development, health, waste management and other community-based initiatives. The Rotarians of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo have also visited and worked with the region surrounding Sunyani, Ghana. We are looking forward to building upon the strong Nanaimo-VIU-Ghana connection that already exists.

This year we plan to focus on children�s health including hygiene and nutrition, malaria, and HIV/AIDS challenges within the communities. We are planning to work with colleagues from the School of Nursing in Sunyani.

We are currently fundraising to support projects with the malaria mosquito net dipping center, the HIV/AIDS voluntary testing and treatment center education initiatives, and the children�s home that we visit as well as to help offset some of the travel costs for VIU and Ghanaian nursing students. At least one-half of our fundraising will go directly to the Ghanaian project funding.
