You are warmly invited to join the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria for the opening concert of their 18th season! In this tribute to Edvard Grieg, the Galiano Ensemble’s performance will include some of the most celebrated and best known pieces from Norway’s most famous composer.
Edvard Grieg was born in 1843 and studied piano from an early age. He entered the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of 15 where he was influenced by Mendelssohn and Schumann. He later took up the folk music traditions of Norway and is considered to be one of the leading composers of the Romantic period.
Incidental Music from Peer Gynt and Holberg Suite, Opus 40, are acknowledged to be among Grieg’s most universally popular orchestral compositions. Elegiac Melodies, Opus 34, represent two songs derived from poetry that have been wonderfully transcribed for string orchestra. Nordic Melodies, Opus 63, was composed much later than most of Grieg’s works and suggests a melancholy described by one observer as “sweet sorrow.”
More than a century after his death Grieg music is still incredibly evocative and much loved all over the world and, of course, in his native Norway. Still today, Norwegians sometimes remember Grieg by wishing others "many happy returns" on his birthday.
Conductor Yariv Aloni and the orchestra promise an entertaining evening of wonderful chamber music so be sure to put this in your calendar!
