From Whelks to Whales in the Salish Sea

Join Rick Harbo for this family friendly illustrated talk about marine life of the Strait of Georgia. Rick’s presentation will cover early collections of the explorers and the wonderful abundance and diversity of marine life in local waters, including sponges, sea stars, shellfish, marine mammals and more. Rick Harbo, B.Sc., retired after 36 years with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as a Habitat Protection Biologist and Resource Management Biologist, South Coast, Nanaimo. He was a member of the abalone recovery team, sea otter recovery team and Mollusc subcommittee of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). He currently is a volunteer Research Associate, Invertebrates, Natural History section at the Royal BC Museum. He is also a photographer and author of several marine life guides. These guides include: • "Tidepool and Reef", updated to "Pacific Reef and Shore." • Award winning, "Whelks to Whales: Coastal Marine life of the Pacific Northwest." • "Shells and Shellfish of the Pacific Northwest." Rick recently contributed to "The Sea Among Us. The Amazing Strait of Georgia," Harbour Publishing, 2014. Tickets are $5 for adult Historical Society members; $6 for adult non-members and $2.50 for any children 4 and over. (GST not included.) Advance tickets are recommended.
