Gordon Hawkin’s new biography brings B.C.’s second premier into focus by exploring the eccentric life of a bombastic visionary who arrived in Victoria in 1858, founded the British Colonist and battled for responsible government against Governor James Douglas.
He championed BC’s entry into confederation, playing a crucial role in the creation of present-day Canada. Yet at his death, and even today, he is hardly remembered. Gordon Hawkins has degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Toronto.
After his service in WWII in naval intelligence, he was presenter of the CBC’s TV and radio discussion program Citizen’s Forum. He has spent many years researching De Cosmos’s life story. Image: Amor de Cosmos, photographed around 1875; second Premier of British Columbia. C-06116, RBCM/BC Archives
