Archives Lecture – Ship Building in Victoria and Vancouver in WWI – Chris Madsen
From 1917-1919, BC became the largest producer of war-purpose merchant ships for the Imperial Munitions Board, coordinated in part by Peter Butchart, the Vancouver Island cement magnate. This transformational role for BC created a legacy of military shipbuilding that continues today.
Chris Madsen is a Professor in the Department of Defence Studies at the Canadian Forces College and Royal Military College of Canada in Toronto, Ontario. He teaches senior and mid-rank officers from the Canadian Forces and foreign armed forces in the area of military planning and operations. He holds a BA (Honours) in history from Simon Fraser University, a MA in history from the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in history from the University of Victoria.
