Drawing from her prize-winning book French Canadians, Furs, and Indigenous Women in the Making of the Pacific Northwest, historian Jean Barman will highlight in this illustrated talk French Canadians’ contributions to Fort Victoria, explain their relationships with indigenous women, and argue for their critical role in the establishment of British Columbia.

Jean Barman has written extensively on British Columbia history. Her most recent book, French Canadians, Furs, and Indigenous Women, has won the Governor General’s Award for Scholarly Research, Canadian Historical Association’s Sir John A. Macdonald Prize for best book on Canadian history, Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on British Columbia, and K.D. Srvistava Prize for best UBC Press book. She is an Emeritus Member of the University of Victoria Faculty of Graduate Studies, Professor Emeritus at UBC, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

This will be a special meeting offered jointly by the Friends of the BC Archives and The Association Historique francophone de Victoria
