Archives Lecture – Gold Nuggets and Silver Salts: The Photographic Legacy of Frederick Dally – Joan Schwartz Frederick Dally produced some of the most iconic images of early BC during the gold-rush era. He was not the first photographer active in Victoria, but he was, unquestionably, the best and one of the most prolific.
During his brief career behind the camera (1866-1870), Dally produced not only a remarkable visual record of people and places from Coast to Cariboo, but an enduring vision of land and life in early British Columbia. Joan Schwartz is Guest Curator of the first major retrospective of Dally’s work, which will open at the RBCM in late 2016.
Her research has taken her around the world, literally – to New Zealand, Australia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States – as well as across Canada several times. Joan even credits Dally with launching her career (1977-2003) in Photography Acquisition and Research at the National Archives of Canada, Ottawa, and her current position as professor of the History of Photography at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.
