C.S. Bailey (1869-1896) was the first Vancouver photographer to specialize exclusively in landscape and marine photography.

Every year between 1888 and 1892 he documented the city’s growth from different vantage points, making him the eyes of the city. He photographed most major commercial enterprise both inside and outside. Along with his competitors, Bailey also created iconic images along the Canadian Pacific Railway.

David Mattison worked for the BC Archives (Royal BC Museum) between 1981 and 2009 as both an archivist and librarian. Beginning in the late 1970s he published many groundbreaking studies of 19th century British Columbia photographers and continues to maintain his online biographical encyclopedia of British Columbia photographers called Camera Workers.
