Author Michael Layland will discuss his most recent book, A Perfect Eden: Encounters by Early Explorers of Vancouver Island. In this volume, Layland has compiled the stories of the early explorations of Vancouver Island between the 1500s and 1800s. A Perfect Eden offers the accounts and voices of the early cartographers and their expanding knowledge of our Island across three centuries of exploration, surveying, and indigenous contacts.
A Perfect Eden is a follow-up project to The Land of Heart’s Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island (2013), which is a compilation of images, stories, and evolution of the early maps of Vancouver Island.
About our speaker: Michael Layland is a former Royal Engineers mapmaker and training officer. He has lived in Victoria since 1991. ### The Nanaimo Historical Society is a non-profit organization.
