Vancouver, BC’s acclaimed François Houle will perform in the second set with Sweden’s Mattias Risberg on piano and the first set will feature one of France’s top stars; renowned prepared piano expert Benoît Delbecq. The evening will explore music as art including brilliant extended piano and clarinet approaches and melodies from the world of avant garde free spontaneous improvisation, as well as the artist’s unique compositions and explorations.

Montreal–born Vancouver saxophonist François Houle has been shortlisted for Downbeat's Reader's and Critic's Polls on several occasions as Rising Star and Talent Deserving Wider Recognition. A former student of Emilio Iacurto (the legendary, long-time principal clarinetist of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra) and Yale University’s Keith Wilson (whose contribution to the clarinet world is unparalleled), Houle has been influenced by Steve Lacy, Alan Hacker, Gil Evans, Jimmy Giuffre, John Carter and Anthony Braxton. From solo, duo and trio creative work to projects with New Music, Mixed Electro Acoustic and other ensembles, Houle’s work is truly impressive. From the ethereal, ambient and transcendent solo work on his Drip Audio release Aerials, to the magical and mysterious mystical collaborations on Songlines with pianist Delbecq, Houle delivers exquisitely engaging performances and enchants audiences with his collaborations and projects.

Swedish pianist Mattias Risberg has collaborated with an array of great European improvisers, including Fredrik Ljungkvist, Mats Äleklint, Joe Williamson, Sofia Jernberg, PerÅkeHolmlander, Jon Fält and Raymond Strid. His otherworldly sonic explorations span jazz, improv, art-rock, and contemporary classical worlds. He grows his passion for old soulful instruments like mellotron, pipeorgans, analog synths etc., and loves to explore and create new soundscapes. Risberg’s working field is often where improvisation meets composition, where old traditions collaborates with new and where music meets other forms of art. He has composed several major pieces and has his own group, Ritualia.

Highly renowned pianist Benoît Delbecq won a prestigious double music award at the 2010 Grand Prix International du Disque (Académie Charles Cros, the French Grammy Awards) and his trio CD «The Sixth Jump » (Songlines) was listed in the New York Times top ten jazz/pop records of 2010. The New York Times writer Nate Chinen has referred to Delbecq as “unconventional and…brilliant”. This concert will delight piano enthusiasts, jazz fans and those interested in experiencing and learning more about these exciting artists, art music and the adventurous world of improvisation. Coffee will be served at intermission with thanks to sponsor Serious Coffee at Beaufort.

Be sure to join us at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music for a meeting of some of the globe’s top improvisers. Delbecq and Houle received rave reviews at last year’s concert at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. Join us for a splendid evening- you will certainly be glad that you did!
