Form, Function & Fabulous in February at The Potters Place!

We are delighted to announce the work of ceramic artist Alan Burgess at the Potters Place throughout the month of February. Alan is a respected potter whos work can be found in collections across Canada and Europe. The Comox Valley is so fortunate to have him here. This Valley is known to be the pottery mecca of Vancouver Island and it is no small part because of the generous spirit and desire to share knowledge that Alan Burgess brings to the Fine Arts department at North Island College (NIC). He heads up the clay program and is also teaches drawing at the college. He has been a source of inspiration and has been a teacher to many of the valley's potting community. The ceramics department at NIC has been a central resource for valley potters under his direction, and many of the potters that make up the magnificently rich clay heritage we have here, have learned a thing or two (or three or four) from Alan over the years.

Alan is spearheading a new Professional Potters program at NIC which will likely bring potters from all over the world to study in an intensive atmosphere where learning Ceramics as a business will take place. The program will also host visiting professional potters, which will continue to enrich our clay community even further. This is a new Professional program and will be very unique.

Alan's began his career in clay in the UK and his early beginnings were that of a production potter. His forms are elegant, beautiful and resolved. He is known for clean, classic shapes with rich traditional glazes and flowing surface brush designs.

His exhibit at the Potters Place will include household ware, such as bowls and mugs, as well as large vases and exhibition pieces. Alan makes the kind of pieces that belong out in full view, long after they have been used for dinner or tea. You'll want to You wont want to shut these pots away in some cupboard waiting for the next time you want a pot of tea or a cuppa cuppa.

Fired Up, a collective of BC ceramic artists, will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in May. Alan is a core member of this wonderful group of island potters. The Potters Place will sponsor a group show in April so be sure to come in and see this wonderful display of works that are created by potters thought Vancouver Island.

In the meantime, don't miss the opportunity to see Alan's fabulous work throughout February 2014.
