Internationally acclaimed conductor, Fiona Blackburn, has selected inspiring repertoire for this concert series – uplifting music that speaks to our theme of flight, and poetry that frees us to imagine what it would be like to fly, such as Victor Hugo’s: “Be like the bird that, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, Feels them give way beneath her, and sings – knowing she has wings.” Of course, there will be a number of songs dedicated to birds, including: swallows & sparrows, blackbirds & larks. Canadian composers and arrangers are featured:Matthew Emery’s I Arise Today, Eleanor Daley’s She’s like the Swallow, Sarah Quartel’s Songbird, and Susan Crowe’s Sparrow.
