Fire Prevention Week Open House

Each year, the Parksville Fire Department recognizes Fire Prevention Week (October 7 to 13) and again this year will open its doors to the public on Sunday, October 14 from 10 am to 2 pm. The open house takes place at the fire hall located at 160 Jensen Avenue West.

The public is encouraged to drop by for a little fun and to learn some possible lifesaving strategies for fire prevention. There will be firefighter guided tours of the station, including trucks and equipment so be sure to bring your camera.

The RCMP will be on site with a child restraint technician to conduct inspection of car seats for the public. If you would like your car seat inspected, please bring your car manual as well as the restraint manual so these can be referenced during the inspection. Also, the seat should be installed in the vehicle prior to arriving at the fire hall.

The theme for this year’s fire prevention week is Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere! The campaign focuses on educating people about three basic but essential steps to reduce the likelihood of having a fire and how you can escape safely.

• “LOOK” for places fire could start. Look around your home and take care of any potential fire hazards.

• “LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Get out and stay out, close doors as you leave. Call 911 from outside your home.

• “LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter. Plan ahead! If a fire breaks out in your home, you may only have a few minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Here are some helpful safety tips to help you and your family escape safely in the event of a fire.

• Make a home escape plan. Draw a map of your home showing all doors and windows.

• Know at least two ways out of every room and that all doors and windows open easily.

• Have an outside meeting place a safe distance away from the home.

• Practice your fire drill at night and during the day with everyone in the house.

• Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.

The Parksville Fire Department would like families to focus on prevention by planning ahead and integrating a few simple fire safety behaviours into everyday lives. By paying attention and eliminating potential fire hazards in your home, you can make a difference that will prevent or reduce fire related injuries, deaths and property damage.
