Kulea Culture Society (KCS) is pleased to announce the launch of Kitchen & Culture – A Cooking Journey. The initial Kitchen & Culture series is six monthly cooking classes featuring both Indigenous people and immigrants to Canada cooking and sharing their favourite dishes.

The goal of this cooking series is to build bridges across our community through food and storytelling. For recent immigrants, this will be their story of immigration to Canada. Each session is taught by a local chef who will prepare a meal highlighting the wonderful tastes of their ethnic cuisine. Sharing and teaching not only how to prepare the dish but its history and significance to their life. This storytelling will help build bridges and decrease discrimination.

In each of the cooking classes, participants can register to cook alongside the chef from their own kitchen. This will be a (virtual) live, interactive class taught through Zoom. Participants will receive the recipe, a list of cooking supplies and other things they might need so they can cook together with the local chef.

Each month we'll have a different chef and a different meal with participants receiving the recipe and equipment list via email before the class. It will be a fun chance to learn about the history and culture of the chef as well as ask questions. The first class is September 18 with Richard from China who will cook Chow Mein – Crispy Hong Kong style. The schedule for the Kitchen & Culture includes:

September – China

October - South Vietnam

November - Brazil

December - Syria

January - Croatia

February – Venezuela

Thanks to generous help from community partners such as Shaw TV, Community Kitchen Victoria Market and Vancity. Each 2-hour class only costs $20 or $75 for the entire series of 6.
