Sophistication, surprise, humour and nostalgia make this a well-layered confection by Jean-Paul Rappeneau (Depardieu’s Cyrano de Bergerac). Financier Jerome (Mathieu Amairic) has been working in Shanghai for 10 years and is coming to Europe to close a deal in London and introduce his Chinese fiancée (Gemma Chan) to his somewhat dysfunctional family. Over dinner, Jerome learns his family home is at the centre of a local dispute between the oily town mayor and an old-school friend and he decides to get involved. There’s corruption, legal irregularities, a pretty distraction, and the missing page from a will – and, in the hands of master filmmaker Rappeneau, it’s a cutting insight into the French bourgeoisie. Complexité, surprise, humour et nostalgie font de ce film une composition bien soutenue par Jean-Paul Rappeneau (Cyrano de Bergerac avec Gérard Depardieu). Le financier Jérôme (Mathieu Amairic) travaille à Shanghai depuis 10 ans et visite l’Europe pour clore un accord à Londres et introduire sa fiancée Chinoise (Gemma Chan) à sa famille quelque peu dysfonctionnelle. Pendant le dîner, Jérôme apprend que la maison de famille est au centre d’une dispute locale entre le maire fourbe et son vieux camarade d’école. Jérôme se retrouve impliqué dans la querelle, bien malgré lui. La corruption au bureau du maire, les irrégularités au cabinet d’avocats, les distractions par une jeune fille, et la page manquante d’un testament sont, entre les mains du réalisateur Rappenau, un portrait tranchant de la bourgeoisie Française.
