ENSEMBLE LAUDE PRESENTS SANCTUARY: CHAMBERS OF THE HEART


Victoria, B.C., February 15, 2014 � Ensemble Laude presents a gala concert entitled Sanctuary: Chambers of the Heart in Victoria, BC on Sunday, April 27 at 7:00 pm. The performance will be at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1205 Pandora Avenue, Victoria.
Ensemble Laude is well-known for its excellence in a cappella performance and medieval repertoire. Sanctuary represents a new direction for the women�s choir, as they will be performing Baroque music accompanied by early music instrumentalists. Much of the music will be performed as it sounded three hundred years ago, using Baroque reconstructions of original instruments.
Several of the Baroque works featured in Sanctuary were composed specifically for women living in convents, schools and orphanages -- institutions which produced many notable female musicians of the period. Repertoire will include pieces composed for the outstanding choir of the Ospedale della Piet� in Venice, for whom Vivaldi also wrote.
Canadian composer Sarah Quartel premieres a new piece as part of this gala concert. Commissioned by Ensemble Laude, Quartel�s Sanctum: A Requiem on Vancouver Island is composed for women�s voices and viola ga gamba. Using text from the traditional Latin requiem, each of the four movements evokes a landscape of our island region: the tumult of the water, the grandeur of the mountains, the stillness of the forest, and the sky after the rain.
Now in its seventeenth year, Ensemble Laude is based in Victoria, BC. Director Elizabeth MacIsaac has led choral ensembles for over 25 years, in both Canada and France. MacIsaac also enjoys an international career as a vocalist specializing in early music and new commissions of contemporary music.
