Kim Senklip Harvey Bio: Kim Senklip Harvey is a proud Syilx and Tsilhqot’in, an Indigenous theorist, and a cultural evolutionist. She is also a Governor-General award-winning storyteller whose work focuses on igniting Indigenous power by creating comedic and joy-centered narratives that nourish her people’s spirits. All her work is created out of respect for her Ancestors, and future generations, to whom so much is owed.
About the play:
"Break Horizons” is a futurist story, and a moving, boundary-breaking adventure. It follows the lives of five Indigenous femmes who are living in a minimum-security prison and battling persecution from The Crown. While there, they voyage into the deep space within their spirits. Armed with the indestructible force that is Indigenous love, this cosmic expedition rocks us with a multiverse of music, dance and story.
What is "Emerging Voices"? TheatreOne uses grants, sponsorships, donations and fundraising to put on three professional play readings every year. Over 30 scripts are submitted across Canada, and our Artistic Associate, Jessica Schact, selects three to be workshopped and to be read by paid professional actors live on stage in the Port Theatre Lobby.
Two days before the reading, the actors, playwright, and Jessica get together for two full-day workshops to get the play to a professional level whereby it is ready for theatre! Once the play is read in front of a live audience, audience members are encouraged to ask questions and give input that will help the playwright develop the script further. This is all about encouraging and promoting our wonderful and talented Canadian writers!
While the entrance is by donation, we encourage all people who want to attend to come regardless of whether they can donate or not.
