add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
This year’s guest speaker will be author Lynne Bowen who has written several books about the history of Vancouver Island, including Laird of the Mines (1999) about the life of Robert Dunsmuir. The speaker series offers a more in-depth look at the lives of the Dunsmuir family, and we encourage everyone interesting and informative event.
Robert Dunsmuir was a Scot with exceptional gifts, but his story is set against a legacy of slavery in the Scottish coal fields, his tragic childhood, the knowledge he acquired in the mining of coal from his father and grandfather and the steely determination of his beloved wife.
His fortune came from the dangerous coal fields of Vancouver Island where skilled labour was in short supply, loss of life was frequent and the fledgling union movement was resolute. The men who worked for him and the families who lived in his company houses were treated well, according to the standards of the late nineteenth century, but only if they allowed him to judge what was best for them.
The lecture is approximately one hour in length and will be followed by a reception with refreshments.
