Join students, staff, and members of the public for a discussion with Charlie Berkowitz, film maker, as part of NIC's Institute of War & Peace Course series. This event will take place on May 28 in the Stan Hagen Theatre, Comox Valley campus, starting at 7:30 pm. Admission is free.
Filmmaker Charlie Berkowitz will discuss his journey as he created 'Odysseus in America', the awarding-winning documentary film based on psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Shays ground-breaking book. 'Odysseus in America' reveals the surprising parallels between Odysseus epic ten-year journey home from Troy sung by Homer nearly 3,000 years ago and events in the lives of todays American combat veterans. Berkowitz is no stranger to trauma: he has been a member of the Emergency Medical Services in both California and New York, serving as a paramedic in Hells Kitchen, Harlem, and Brooklyn. He is a founding member of NYC Medics, a volunteer disaster relief team, and he has participated with NYCM in subsequent deployments to Pakistans Northwest Frontier Province and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
The Institute of War & Peace courses, which begin in May 2014, will provide a unique learning experience that brings students, faculty, and community together to explore the themes of war and peace.
