The Bachelor of Interior Design at Vancouver Island University supplies students with the necessary range of skills and theoretical background needed to enter into the Interior Design industry. The program provides students with the tools to create and modify spaces in order to improve enjoyment and quality of life for occupants.
Each year, the programs fourth year students complete a major grad project which spans two semesters. For this project, students are required to select an existing structure and carry on a complete renovation. The project involves an extensive phase of historical and functional research, building code analysis, and concept development, in order to establish appropriate standards and set up goals that lead to the extension of the structures lifespan with the generation of value added through innovation, encompassing concepts of functionality, beauty, energy efficiency and sustainability.
Students in the program face an intense workload, but the work is extremely rewarding. This involves the production of presentation boards, a complete set of construction drawings, selection of finishes, and building specifications; ending with a book that documents the overall process.
This spring, VIUs Interior Design graduates will be putting on a showcase to display these thesis projects. The public is encouraged to come take a look - for industry members to come meet some new faces entering the professional realm, and for others to see the multifaceted work being completed by the new professionals of Interior Design.
The distinct projects showcased, cover examples of hospitality, retail, housing and commerce, displaying, boldly and brilliantly, the personal and professional interests of the graduates; having all as a common strategy the revitalization of heritage buildings as a symbol of our community aspirations, culture an identity.
