Denise Levertov and Rabindranath Tagore

Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse". He became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. His contributions to music influenced his writing as much as his devotion to both political and personal subject matter. Denise Levertov: Dignity, reverence, and strength are words that come to mind as one gropes to characterize . . . one of America's most respected poets," wrote Amy Gerstler in the Los Angeles Times Book Review. Gerstler added that a "reader poking her nose into any Levertov book at random finds herself in the presence of a clear uncluttered voice—a voice committed to acute observation and engagement with the earthly, in all its attendant beauty, mystery and pain." Allannah Dow and Leah Hokanson, both Gabriola musicians, will present some selections from both poets and play cello and piano, inspiring us to feel the words resonate within. An hour that will allow you to meditate to music and words.
