On October 10th, the world will be celebrating the second annual Day of the Girl. This year, The Didi Society will be hosting the documentary film Girl Rising at Cinecenta at the University of Victoria.
Admission will be by donation, with all proceeds going to our education program here in Victoria and to a scholarship fund for the womens cooperatives we are partnered with in India and Guatemala. Click here for tickets to the screening.
After the screening, we will have a panel of women in education addressing some of the themes and questions derived from the documentary.
Here are 5 reasons why you should support this screening and girls in education:
1. Globally, 66 million girls are currently not enrolled in either primary or secondary education (UNESCO, 2012).
2. Girls with 8 years of education are 4 times less likely to be married as children. (Mensch, Singh, and Casterline, 2005)
3. A child born to a literate mother is 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5. (UNESCO, 2011) and educated mothers are more than twice as likely to send their children to school (UNICEF).
4. A girl on planet earth has a 1 in 4 chance of being born into poverty (The World Bank, 2008)
5. If India enrolled 1% more girls in secondary school, their GDP would rise by $5.5 billion (Global Campaign for Education and RESULTS Education Fund)
