Danny Michel ~ Matadora (Duncan)

The starting point for Danny Michel’s brand new album Matadora is the story of Conchita Cintrón, a pioneering female bullfighter who was arrested for defying the Peruvian government’s ban on women in the sport.
Michel finds inspiration as well as ethical quandary in this woman’s story, with admiration for Cintrón, but also opposition to her chosen path. Herein lies the crux of Matadora’s matter – the extremes of humanity’s potential for good and for bad, and all the moral grey area in between.
Musically, Matadora has one foot in the Caribbean and one back in Canada. Some songs recall the Belizean rhythms of Michel’s previous release, the Juno-nominated Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, while others reflect Matadora’s origin in Michel’s home studio. The album has been hitting the right notes with critics, who appreciate its confident sincerity and pacifist platform.
