Dam Poets! at it Again! August 25 Colliery Dams Park
The official Dam Poets, organized by Meldy Wilton, the founder and organizer from the Wilton Broad Players Art & Theatre Society, whom arranged the "Dam Slam, flash flood of poetry" in July 14, 2013 at the Colliery Dams Park at the Lower Dam and the subsequent Dam Poets Reading at the Harewood Activity Hall August 10, 2013, that resulted in several official "Dam Poets"; has arranged the Dam Poets to read at the Community Picnic August 25 at the Lower Dam at Colliery Dams Park after 2pm. The Official Dam Poets are: Meldy Wilton; RP Broad; Dale Schulz (Dasch); Darragh Worledge; Owl & Pussycat (Jim and Jeannette) and Brunie Brunie; whom will be presenting their work at the Potluck Community Picnic held by the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society, open to the public at the Lower Dam, August 25 2013.
The inspiration for the Poetry is the Colliery Dams Park and the preservation of the 65 acres that were originally purchased for its citizens by the Harewood Improvement District, that was an inclusive decision brought to public meetings to Harewood citizens for decision making, and carried through by their elected representatives, Mr. Rod Glen, Mr Alex Virostko and Mr Jim Borserio. The City of Nanaimo only acquired the parklands and sportsfields and the caretaking of them, through the Letters Patent January 1 1975, after November 2 1974 amalgamation referendums of 7 Improvement Districts. The Harewood Improvement District founders originally purchased three properties resulting in the area known as Colliery Dams and Parklands, as well as other fields, parks, Centennial Sportsfield and created amenities on the premise of the importance of connection for communities to their parklands, waterways, heritage and forests for creating healthy successful communities for its citizens. They were also in tuned to the emerging principles in the 1950's - 1960's that resulted in such work as those of Michael Hough a leader in the world with Landscape Architecture in Natural spaces, that the City of Nanaimo is yet to incorporate. The Harewood Improvement district members were well ahead of their time with intentions that were for their citizens to live in harmony with the Dams and Parklands, preserving ecosystems developed over hundreds of years and other sports fields to create a healthy harmonious living space that is only now being recognized by some of our local cities in Canada and North America.
The poetry inspired by saving the Colliery Dams and Park from demolishing and destruction from the City of Nanaimo and has resulted in work of the "Dam Poets", is being compiled for a chapbook that will be available for sale soon.Hope to see you at this free fun family community event.
