We gather to memorialize women, girls and transgender people who have lost their lives in gender-based violence and to honour those who left to mourn and carry on despite their grief and rage. We will gather at Sands Funeral Chapel this event will feature speakers and entertainment. After the ceremony, we will walk with lit candles, down Trunk Road and back to the chapel. Please wear warm, comfortable clothing. After the walk, join us for snacks and hot drinks compliments of Sands. We thank Sands Funeral Chapel for providing the refreshments and the space for this important community event.
CWAV Society’s Social Action Committee seeks to involve our community in the conversation about gender-based violence, violence against women, intimate partner violence, missing and murdered women and girls, and violence against gender-variant people across our country. Our nation’s marginalized populations are calling for an arena in which their voices can be heard and for new kinds of justice. We’re inviting the community to join this cause by making ourselves visible on December 6th, this annual day of reminder about violence against women to raise awareness about all gender-based violence.
This year's vigil will also be honouring murdered and missing indigenous women and girls and the National Inquiry Into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls that has been called to examine and report on the systemic causes behind the violence that Indigenous women and girls experience, and their greater vulnerability to violence, by looking for patterns and underlying factors that explain why higher levels of violence occur.
