Join us at the Gabriola Commons on Labour Day weekend for Gabriola Island’s end-of-summer and family-friendly celebration of music, theatre, art, and our community.

We’re excited to present the official music and theatre lineups for your 2019 Cultivate Festival.. We encourage you to dive deep into the offerings of each performer. Check out links to videos and music online at cultivate.artsgabriola.ca, and plug into our social media.

Music Headliners

Musically, we’re proud to present several folk legends: Gabriola’s own Hall-of-Famer Gary Fjellgard, folk music royalty Shari Ulrich, and perennial fave Lester Quitsau.

Roots Roundup, La Familia, Kitty and The Rooster, and Caleb Hart will get you dancing, with high-energy and high-quality world-infused sounds. Mz. Panik will continue to push boundaries with her “Wholesome MC” Haida- inspired raps.

World-Class Theatre

Our theatre offerings this year are gritty, playful, and dive deep into the human experience. World-touring D-Day drama Jake’s Gift returns to its Gabriola roots. One of the most creative theatre collaborations on the Salish Sea, Mind of A Snail, open magical worlds through old-school light projectors. The Wilds will captivate with the Wonderheads’ signature masks.

Bringing Back the Goat Barn

Last year’s wildly popular dance venue, the Goat Barn will feature the driving and other-worldly electronic sounds of beatfarmer, and other genre-pushing electronic artists—one night only!

Celebrating the Local Art Scene

Cultivate celebrates authentic Gabriola-grown talent, with NoRey, Hale & Hearty, Broadband, Moonsister, and others. Uplifting soundscapes from Sol Jam Kirtan and Soul Dive Sound Journeys start our mornings off right. Local installation artists, play facilitators, empaths, and roving performers bring the grounds to life.

This year’s festival will also have a delightful community of vendors, artists, and growers, offering their art, food, and hearts.

Brings the Kids

Children and families are the soul of this festival. Everyone will enjoy our family show with The Oot n’ Oots, overflowing with humour and groovy tunes. Cultivate offers a free Sunday family theatre show from the brilliant imaginations of Mind of a Snail. Almost all our music and theatre programming is family-friendly and all-ages.

Our Cultivate Family Zone will be at the centre of the action this year—a family- and child-friendly safe creative space run by art teachers, parents, and peer helpers, building connections through art and play.

Cultivate is free to anyone 16 or under.

Cultivate Community

We’re humbled to present these offerings as the backbone of Cultivate 2019. But we’re equally excited about the connections and culture that grows around the space, performances, and artistic experiences.

We’re especially grateful for the Gabriola Commons, who have created true community space. We are proud to join  with the Commons teams and grow our special partnership. This year, we’re thrilled that the Antony Holland Theatre Stage will move to the Commons—the entire festival is on Commons grounds.

Cultivate can't exist without a community. If you're interested in volunteering, visit cultivate. artsgabriola.ca.

We offer Cultivate to all generations of this island, as a way to celebrate art and abundance, have fun and dance, solidify our bonds, and love the earth. We intend Cultivate as a joyful and grateful celebration of summer, and a love letter to Gabriola.

Tickets are on sale now at cultivate.artsgabriola.ca and North Road Sports. Early-bird pricing ends July 31.
