Crimson Coast Dance: Sinha Danse & Constantinople - Sunya

SINHA DANSE is a dance company created in 1991 by Roger Sinha, in Montreal. His work merges contemporary dance with classical Indian dance, martial arts and new technologies. Roger Sinha uses the universality of the body to explore cultural harmony and dissonance, and tensions created by the collision of East and West.
Drawing inspiration from ancient Istanbul, a trailblazing city illuminating East and West, the CONSTANTINOPLE ensemble founded in 2001 by Kiya and Ziya Tabassian (setar and tombak) and joined later by Pierre-Yves Martel (viola da gamba), is built on fruitful encounters. Its musicians, an integral part of Montreal’s music scene, have constantly replenished their sources of inspiration, seasoned migrants that they are. From mediaeval manuscripts, Mediterranean and Eastern oral traditions to improvisational works and New World baroque, they are unafraid to take risks with other experimenters in sound, in the course of 30 projects. As cultural and historical ferrymen of the imagination, Constantinople inhabits the present with a heightened sense of dialogue and harmony…
Sunya (in Sanskrit, «zero» and «number») refers to this fundamental paradox of being, of language, of movement... The movement of exile, the movement of art -hybridization.
Every sound stems from a gesture, but in an abyss of silence, can movement take place? Every expression is based on a memory, but when memory is plural, how does it resonate? And what happens when two artists, a choreographer and a composer, each at the crossroads of cultures, join forces? Starting from both nothing and everything they are made of? Four dancers, three musicians and a visual artist experiment here, guided in turn by the Indo-Armenian dancer and choreographer Roger Sinha and Iranian-born gatherer of musical pearls Kiya Tabassian , immersed in dialogue. From the universal quest for identity to the collective epic, a creative gesture like the dreamlike echo of a world reconciled.
Sinha Danse & Constantinople performance will be followed by teaching fusion contemporary classes as well as a South Asian dinner and dance pairing.
