This week-long Cowichan Valley Artisans show at PORTALS - the Cowichan Valley Arts Councils Centre for Art, Culture and Heritage in the Island Savings Centre in Duncan - provides a sneak peek of what is on offer during the Cowichan Valley Artisans' Easter Weekend Studio Tour. The sneak peek provides a small teaser sample of what the Cowichan Valley Artisans have to offer the public in their studios.
The Cowichan Valley Artisans (CVA) isa group of professional artisanswho produce a gallery show and an Easter Weekend Studio Tour as a means of promoting their year-round studio tour that runs from Ladysmith to Mill Bay.
The emphasis is on high quality fine craft. The concept of craft employed, however, extends to practices not usually found in run-of-the-mill studio tours: CVA boasts not only painters, potters, glass artisans and a wood turner, but two furniture makers, a nationally acclaimed chef focusing on zero-mile cuisine, the only winery on the continent that makes ancient method balsamic vinegars and a traditional barber trained and certified in the age-old art of straight razor shaves.
Although the efforts of CVA is to promote its members, CVA in turn supports its community and arts scene:The Land Conservancyand theSomenos MarshWildlife Society are socio-environmental efforts that are included free of charge in the brochure, on the map and on the CVA web site in an effort to promote these sites as well as provide tour goers respite from the rat-race.CVA supports its local arts scene by encouraging its members to participate in the Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show, donating to the Cowichan Valley Arts Council fund raiser and by rentingPORTALS, the Arts Council's exhibition space.
Come and see what the Cowichan Valley Artisans have to offer either at their PORTALS Sneak Peek Show and Sale, at their studios during their Easter Weekend Studio tour or at their studios any time during the year on their year-round studio tour. For each studio's hours outside of the PORTALS show and the Easter Weekend Studio Tour, the Cowichan Valley Artisans studio tour brochure is available throughout the Cowichan Valley but always at Excellent Framing, 28 Station St., Duncan, and at Experience Cycling 482 Trans Canada Ave., Duncan.
