A Courtenay Little Theatre production Enchanted April by Matthew Barber Director: Vivien Douglas Matthew Barber's multi-award winning play "Enchanted April", is based on the 1920s novel of the same name by Elisabeth Arnim. It was also made into a successful film starring Joan Plowright, Miranda Richardson and Jim Broadbent. Set shortly after WWI, this romantic comedy tells the story of two downtrodden English housewives, Lotty and Rose, who, (like a more recent stage heroine, Shirley Valentine,) decide to escape for a while from their husbands and treat themselves to a spring holiday in an Italian castle. Unable to afford the cost, they advertise for female companions and are joined by an elderly, somewhat cantankerous dowager, Mrs Graves, and a beautiful young socialite, Lady Caroline. At the castle they are cared for by Costanza, a cheeky maid (who speaks only in Italian throughout). When they are unexpectedly joined by their husbands, Mellersh and Frederick, and the owner of the castle, the artist Anthony Wilding, some amusing complications ensue, some of which, border on farce. Act I is set in various locations, but entirely in rainy London. Act II is set entirely on the sun-drenched terrace of the Italian castello.
