In this lively presentation, Margaret Horsfield will introduce some of the most outstanding personalities she has come across in the course of writing her three books of West Coast history.
All of these people lived in the isolated, rain-drenched inlets and bays of Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island’s west coast in the early 20th century. They include the feisty pioneer Cougar Annie; the irascible storekeeper Walter Dawley; the Tla-o-qui-aht Chief Joseph and his wife Queen Mary; the lonely missionary Charles Moser; the amateur dramatics maestro Rowland Brinckman; the wildly eccentric settler Fred Tibbs and many others.
Colourful and entertaining, illustrated with dozens of extraordinary images, this talk is not to be missed! Born in Port Alberni, and raised in BC, Margaret Horsfield lived for many years in England, working for BBC Radio. During these years she also contributed to CBC’s IDEAS programme, and as a print journalist she wrote for many different magazines and newspapers.
She has written six books, including three about the west coast of Vancouver Island: Cougar Annie’s Garden (1999 – winner of the Roderick Haig Brown Book Prize); Voices from the Sound (2008 – nominated for the Haig Brown Prize); and co-written with Ian Kennedy, Tofino and Clayoquot Sound: A History (2014 – nominated for the Haig Brown Prize). Margaret has lived in Nanaimo since the mid 1990s.
