Young sax sensation Conn Stewart makes his second appearance at Live Jazz at Crofton Hotel leading NJaM: The New Jazz Messengers on four saxophones and vocals. This outstanding young quartet includes three of Vancouvers most sought after Young Lions making their debut together on Vancouver Island: Berklee College of Music pianist Adrian Michael (recent CD Release "In Colour"), go-to UBC bassist Angus Lam, and Humber drummer Miles Wong (leads Native Tongues Quartet at the Cellar Jazz Club in August). They will be presenting two highly entertaining sets guaranteed to shake the dust off of everyday life, including up-tempo standards, gorgeous ballads, contemporary compositions, and stunning originals. Join the band for a third set jam. Dont miss this!
Since beginning tenor saxophone lessons at 14 with iconic Nanaimo jazz instructor Steve Jones, gifted young woodwind player Conn Stewart has been turning heads and making a name for himself wherever hes played. Now 16 and seeking new challenges, he has set himself the task of learning on the bandstand as older generations of jazzers did, leading or appearing in various top Vancouver young lion, and Vancouver Island adult and professional combos and bands. In addition to NJaM, he also leads The Jazz Apostles, The Hot Seven Vintage Jazz Band, The Conn Stewart Quintet, Quartet, and Trio, The Stewart/ Gorenko Duo, works as a sideman, and plays various saxophones as a member of the Mingus Amongus sextet (Vancouver), the B.C. All Star Big Band (Vancouver), the Arrowsmith Big Band (Vancouver Island), and has been recruited for several Vancouver recording projects in the coming year, including a co-written CD.
Stewart has appeared at numerous venues from Comox to Portland, including the Cellar Jazz Club, The Kozmik Zoo, Jazz Vespers at Sylvan United, The Queen's Hotel, The Avalanche Bar and Grill, Hermanns Jazz Club, The Coast Bastion Hotel, West Cafe, and Blue Frog Studios.
