Remembrance Day is a day for all Canadians to remember the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. It is a day we encourage every individual, young and old, to pause, to give thanks and to remember.

This year marks 100 years of the official end of the First World War.

Four churches and HMCS Alberni Museum and Memorial will be ringing their bells on November 11th, 100 times.

The ringing of bells emulates the moment in 1918 when church bells across Europe tolled as four years of war had come to an end.

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, corner of N. Island Hwy and Dingwall Road, will be ringing their bell and at the same time a lone Piper will play The Battle’s O’er. Cadets, Legion, RCMP and Militia in attendance. A short service will follow. Several Common Wealth War Commission graves are found at St. Andrew’s Cemetery honouring soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the First and Second World Wars. 

The HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial (HAMM) will be ringing the Remembrance Bell at the Museum lobby 100 times while reading the names of 100 service men and women who gave their lives in service to this country during the past 100 years. Spectators are invited to attend. Christ The King Catholic Church,  Tunner Drive was dedicated in 1992 , this brought all the Comox Valley Parishes into one Catholic Community. The Church will be ringing their electronic bells at sunset. 

St. George’s United Church, 6th Street and Fitzgerald ave was originally opened in 1913 on Fifth Street. In 1946 it was moved in its entirety to its present location without a sound from the bell in the tower. 

The Old Church Theatre on Harmston ave. The Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church was constructed in 1938. The Old Church Theatre Society formed in 1992 to purchase the building, and to preserve it from destruction. The carillon (electronic bells) will be rung manually for this Remembrance. Courtenay council designated the building a heritage site in 1997.
