The Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) is embarking on a new project and want to hear your stories and experiences about living on the strait. They will be hosting at workshop at NDSS cafeteria at 6:30pm Wednesday January 19th. Please enter through gym doors. This event is cosponsored with the NDSS Community Schools Program.
The workshop will include a brief presentation by GSA staff followed by hands on mapping activities that can be done at any pace. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening.
More about the map:
GSA is endeavouring to create a first-stop site for users wanting information about the strait. The map will allow users to access a variety of levels of detail, each level containing information about areas of ecological importance, stewardship and restoration, and places of community interest and importance.
An important component of the map will be the addition of information that members of the Georgia Strait community feel important. This could be something like your favourite beach, a place you love to watch wildlife, or a place that you notice is being affected by pollution or needs protection.
GSA wants the map to be comprehensive and they are sensitive to the fact that many community organizations have worked long and hard on mapping projects. Therefore, a hope of GSA is that the map would be able to link to works others have created in order to pool all the information in one area. GSA would like to include sources of existing scientific and community organization data thus creating a comprehensive source of knowledge about the state of the Strait of Georgia.
Once the map is developed and the data is organized, GSA intends to use the input collected to inform the creation of a set of Georgia Strait Protection Principles. These principles will be used as a tool to educate municipal planners and decision-makers about local marine priorities, and shoreline and watercourse protection. GSAs hope is that communities will adopt these principles and incorporate them into their local community planning processes.
Come join GSA on Wednesday January 19th and have your voice heard. Please register in advance by email: [email protected] or by phone @ 250-753-3459.
